Ichthyofauna of two lentic ecosystems in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, India

Bikramjit Sinha

Abstract

Substantial studies have been made on the ichthyofauna of Arunachal Pradesh and every year some new species are being described from the state. However, a common gap in all the studies been the non-exploration of the lentic bodies of the state. The present paper reports the ichthyofauna of two lentic bodies of East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. Addition of four new records to the district, occurrence of rare fishes such Chaca chaca and Tetraodon cuticutia particularly in Ramro lake suggests that the wetlands needs immediate attention for thorough exploration and intervention of suitable measures for conservation of rare species. Seasonal visit of the lake by rare migratory birds highlights the importance of the lakes from biodiversity point of view and the potential for developing the lakes as eco-tourism spots.
