Abstract

We provide a list of reptiles and amphibians recorded in a strictly protected area, the Aiuaba Ecological Station, state of Ceará, Brazil. A total of 110 days of herpetofaunal inventory fieldwork (in dry season during October and November 2010, June and September 2012; in June, September and October 2013, May and June 2014; at the the rainy season in April and May 2011 and april 2013, between January and December 2013, January and February 2014) has been accomplished. We used pitfall trap arrays, besides glue traps and active searches. We recorded 57 species (16 lizards, 1 amphisbaena, 17 snakes, 20 amphibians, and 3 chelonians), distributed in 23 families. Rarefaction curves for snakes and general herpetofauna suggest that species richness is still underestimated for the area. The species number for amphibians and lizards is similar to the generated by diversity estimator. Despite its small area, the Aiuaba Ecological Station act as a herpetofaunal refuge, protecting an important diversity of herpetofauna’s species.
